find a color

What are you going to do hey

What are you going to do

Put your hands up on your head

Look around for something red

Reach down and touch your shoe

Look around for something blue

Let's wave to the music fellow

Look around for something yellow

Grab a rope, then mister - pull

Look around for something purple

Make a face that's really mean

Look around for something green

Stomp your feet down on the floor . . . and

Look around for something orange

Put your hand on your chin and think

Look around for something pink

Turn the world upside down

Look around for something brown

Put your hands behind your back

Look around for something black

We could sing this song all day - la, la, la, la, la, la, la, (repeat as needed

Look around for something gray

We could sing this song all night

Look around for something white

That's what I'm going to do

Yes that’s what I'm going to do

Find A Color - Behind the Scenes

Find a Color has been a staple in my preschool classes and is never the same twice. How can it be when you invite your audience to participate so actively? The verses above are close to what I recorded but not exactly the same. It's a song that I hope never has a "right" or "standard" version.

The directions are simple and the possibilities are endless. If the teacher wants the children to stay seated you can enjoy pointing out what they are wearing. This can also be a great movement song giving children much more freedom to explore and share the unexpected. When I used this song during the pandemic on zoom kids would leave the camera frame and come back with all kinds of toys, foods, clothing, or favorite keepsakes. Some even took me on tour of their homes.

During the winter of 2016 / 2017, my boys were playing both inside and out. We recorded a rough version of the song with Luke playing piano while I played the egg shakers. I captured some other footage from the day with my two other sons, Charlie and Owen, friend, Cole and our dog, Casey, to make the Find a Color video available on You Tube.
