Cookie Recipe

I was mixing the flour, sugar and butter,

Baking soda and salt

Eggs, brown sugar, vanilla,

When somebody hollered, “HALT!!!”

"You can’t make a cookie recipe – like that

It doesn’t make any sense

If you’re gonna feed hungry children

You gotta use more ingredients."

"Like what” I said, “Can you help me out?

Can you tell me please what it’s all about?

Can you help me make a tasty treat?

That all the children in the world will like to eat.”

So I got some broccoli and spinach,

Brussell sprouts on top

Artichoke and cauliflower

When somebody hollered, “STOP”

“You can’t make a cookie recipe – like that

It doesn’t make any sense

If you’re gonna feed hungry children

You gotta use sweet ingredients.”

“Like what” I said, “Can you help me out?

Can you tell me please what it’s all about?

Can you help me make a tasty treat?

That all the children in the world will like to eat.”

So I add some chocolate chips, and butterscotch,

Peanut butter too

M&Ms and caramel

And marshmallow sticky goo

“That’s right” he said,

“Now I’ve helped you out.

And now you know what it’s all about?

I’ve helped you make a tasty treat?

That all the children in the world will like to eat.”

So I mixed the flour, sugar and butter,

Baking soda and salt

Eggs, brown sugar, vanilla,

And nobody hollers, “HALT!!!”

Because I add the chocolate chips, and butterscotch,

Peanut butter too

M&Ms and caramel

And marshmallow sticky goo - Yum Yum

Cookie Recipe - Behind the Scenes

Baking cookies is a great weekend activity. So is playing music in the kitchen. So is writing songs. This song began as a rhythm exercise as we were mixing batter and banging on pots and pans. The lyrics and overall theme came easily as I added ingredients and looked for something to rhyme in the first couplet. After that I had to come up with why "somebody hollered halt." Adding vegetables to the cookie batter seemed like just the problem that would hook the children. In the classroom, pre-school students love to make it right by suggesting the chocolate chips, etc. in the final verse. Some kids will sometimes offer other ingredients like coconut, cinamon, sprinkles, bananas, etc. Like many other songs on this album it is fun to play around with the ideas.
