Did you know that a good book, a catchy song or a well crafted story compliments what kids experience in their day to day lives? Children learn while they play. What they discover on their own is reinforced by what they hear and what is shared with them. Rhyme is one tool that we have in our toolbox to help children remember. I love leaving out the final word of a rhyming couplet and watching the wheels of a child's brain search for the perfect word. It is a fantastic way for children to build vocabulary. Ask your child where he or she learned a particular word and they might say, "I just know it." Chances are they learned it in a book you read, a song you sung or a story you told them long ago. |
